Dell screen problems fall into a short list, and each one has its own page: a black or white spot (pixels, pressure, backlight), a line (panel connector, cable, or graphics), a colour cast (settings or panel ageing), flicker (settings, cable, or connector), burn-in ghosts (OLED ageing), a blurry image (settings), half the screen blank (panel driver), or touch that stops responding in one area (digitiser).

Test it now

Full-screen white, black and grey, then the three colours. Note what you see, on which colours, and whether it changes with pressure or lid angle. Then answer the questions on the home page, or pick the matching symptom from the list below.

What it is

Dell screen problems fall into a short list, and each one has its own page: a black or white spot (pixels, pressure, backlight), a line (panel connector, cable, or graphics), a colour cast (settings or panel ageing), flicker (settings, cable, or connector), burn-in ghosts (OLED ageing), a blurry image (settings), half the screen blank (panel driver), or touch that stops responding in one area (digitiser). Run the full-screen colours and use the three questions below to land on the right one. Dell laptops have the best pixel policy in the business (Premium Panel Guarantee on XPS, Latitude and Precision); if the laptop is in warranty, Dell replaces panels for faults other makers would refuse.

Can it be fixed?

Settings and software faults: yes. Cables and connectors: usually, as a small repair. Panel faults: replacement. The pages linked below say which is which for each symptom.

What to do

  1. Full-screen colours.
  2. Screenshot: fault in the screenshot = software or graphics, not the screen.
  3. Match the symptom to a page below.
  4. In warranty and no impact or pressure: claim before paying.

What a repair costs

United States$100–300 for a new panel (parts $50–150 plus labour); budget and 1080p panels at the low end, touch and high-refresh panels at the high end
India₹3,000–8,000 for a new panel at an independent repair shop; ₹6,000–15,000 at the brand service centre

Typical ranges from repair-shop and manufacturer price lists, 2026-09-06. Get two quotes; prices vary by model and city.

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).

Every laptop symptom

Black spot on laptop screenA black spot — also called a black dot, dark spot, black patch or black mark on the laptop screen — that stays in the same place on every colour is physical: a cluster of dead pixels, a crack in the LCD layer, or pressure damage where the liquid crystal has been crushed. Not fixable — new panelWhy is my laptop screen green?A green tint over the whole screen — or a screen that is entirely green — almost always means one colour channel is missing or one is stuck on, and that is a signal problem, not a panel defect: the display cable through the hinge has worked loose or a pin has failed, a graphics driver has misconfigured the colour output, or a colour filter (Night Light, a colour profile, a screen-reader filter) is on.FixableWhite dots in laptop screenWhite dots that show on dark screens and vanish on white are almost always in the backlight, not the pixels: a tiny reflector dot inside the backlight has come unglued and is bouncing light straight at you.FixableVertical black line on laptop screenA one-pixel-wide vertical line that runs the full height of the screen is a failed column driver on the panel or a broken trace in the panel's flexible connector.Depends — see testAcer screen flickeringA flickering Acer laptop screen is one of four things, and the tests separate them in a minute.FixableHorizontal lines on HP laptop screenHorizontal lines on an HP laptop screen come from one of three places, and the test tells them apart.Depends — see testHP Pavilion screen flickeringA flickering HP Pavilion screen is one of four things, and the tests separate them in a minute.FixableLaptop screen green tintA laptop screen that has gone green all over is the signal or the panel's colour balance, and it is usually the signal.FixableLaptop screen yellow tintA laptop screen that has gone yellow all over is the signal or the panel's colour balance, and it is usually the signal.FixableSurface Pro 4 screen ghostingA flickering Surface Pro 4 screen is one of four things, and the tests separate them in a minute.FixableWhite spot on Lenovo laptop screenOn Lenovo ThinkPad and IdeaPad screens this is a known pattern: a bright, soft-edged white spot that shows on dark backgrounds, most often near the lower half of the screen.FixableBlack line on laptop screen LenovoA black line on a Lenovo laptop screen comes from one of three places, and the test tells them apart.Depends — see test
