Not fixable — new panel

Pressure marks on a laptop screen are places where the panel has been squeezed — a thumb on the lid, a charger in the bag, a laptop closed on a pen — and the liquid crystal at that point no longer twists to let light through.

Test it now

Full-screen white: the marks show. Wipe once with a dry microfibre cloth: they stay. Full-screen black: they vanish. That combination is pressure damage.

What it is

Pressure marks on a laptop screen are places where the panel has been squeezed — a thumb on the lid, a charger in the bag, a laptop closed on a pen — and the liquid crystal at that point no longer twists to let light through. They show as dark blotches, smudges or short lines on white, sharp-edged or soft, and they disappear on black. They are not dirt and they are not on the surface.

Can it be fixed?

No. Very light marks occasionally fade over weeks; most are permanent. Rubbing, heat and pressure make them worse. The fix is a new panel, and it is accidental damage, not a warranty fault. For a small mark most people live with it.

What to do

  1. White, wipe, white again, black.
  2. Photograph and leave it alone.
  3. Panel quote if it is in the working area; otherwise live with it.
  4. Prevent more: nothing between keyboard and lid, no weight on the closed laptop, a hard sleeve in the bag.

What a repair costs

United States$100–300 for a new panel (parts $50–150 plus labour); budget and 1080p panels at the low end, touch and high-refresh panels at the high end
India₹3,000–8,000 for a new panel at an independent repair shop; ₹6,000–15,000 at the brand service centre

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
