Why MacBooks show marks other laptops do not

MacBook lids close with very little clearance over the keyboard, and the display assembly is thin. Anything left on the keys — a charger cable, a lens cover, even a thick keyboard cover — presses into the panel when the lid shuts. The result is the pattern MacBook owners recognise instantly: faint marks in the shape of the keys, or a soft dark patch where something sat. These are pressure marks in the liquid crystal layer and they are permanent.

The habit that prevents almost all of them is simple: never close the lid with anything on the keyboard, including a cleaning cloth.

Heat blotches and orange discolouration

An orange or brown blotch, usually near the hinge or a corner, is heat damage to the display’s bonding layers — most often from sustained heavy load with the machine on a soft surface that blocks its vents. It looks like a stain under the glass because that is effectively what it is. It is permanent and it slowly spreads.

Coating damage

Some Retina displays develop patchy areas where the anti-reflective coating has worn away, typically where the palm rests or keys touch the screen, or where the display has been cleaned with the wrong product. It looks like a smear that will not clean off, because the coating itself is gone. Apple ran a repair programme for this on certain models; outside that, it is a display replacement. Cleaning only with a dry or barely damp soft cloth — never alcohol or household cleaner — prevents it.

What Apple covers

Apple treats pressure marks, heat damage and impact as accidental, so they fall outside the standard warranty — AppleCare+ covers them under its accidental damage terms with an excess. Lines, flicker and panel faults that appear with no incident are treated as hardware failures and are covered while the machine is in warranty. Photograph the fault on a white screen, with the date, before booking an appointment; it is the evidence that makes the difference.

Repair cost

MacBook display assemblies are among the most expensive laptop screens to replace, because Apple service supplies the panel, lid, hinges and camera as one bonded unit. Independent repairers can sometimes replace the panel alone for considerably less, though not on every model. On an older machine the repair can approach the resale value, so price both before deciding.

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
