Screen Defect

Lines on laptop screen HP

About 7 seconds, full screen, then one question.

A line pattern shows a missing or extra row instantly; the colour tiles below show whether it is on every colour.

Plain colours, full screen:

Depends — see test

A line on an HP laptop screen comes from one of three places, and the test tells them apart.

Test it now

Full-screen white, then black, then the colours: a panel line is fixed and identical on all of them. Tilt the lid slowly from 45° to 120° — a cable line changes or disappears. Plug in an external monitor or TV: if the lines are there too, it is the graphics chip or driver. Take a screenshot: a line in the screenshot is never the screen.

What it is

A line on an HP laptop screen comes from one of three places, and the test tells them apart. Lines that change when you tilt the lid: the display cable through the hinge. Lines that are also on an external monitor or in a screenshot: the graphics chip or driver, not the screen. Lines that are fixed, identical on every colour, and only on the built-in screen: the panel. HP laptops (Pavilion, 15s, Victus) use a thin 30-pin eDP cable through the hinge that wears at the left hinge; lines and flicker that change with lid angle are that cable, not the panel.

Can it be fixed?

Cable: yes, a small repair (the cable is a ₹500–1,500 part in India, $20–40 in the US, plus labour). Graphics driver: yes, free — update, or roll back. Panel: no, replace the panel. Graphics chip hardware: usually a motherboard, and on a laptop that decides whether it is worth it.

What to do

  1. Screenshot and external monitor first: lines on both = graphics driver or chip.
  2. Lid tilt: changes = cable; a small repair.
  3. Fixed on every colour, only on the built-in screen: panel quote.
  4. In warranty and no drop or pressure: claim it — lines are a covered panel fault.

What a repair costs

United States$100–300 for a new panel (parts $50–150 plus labour); budget and 1080p panels at the low end, touch and high-refresh panels at the high end
India₹3,000–8,000 for a new panel at an independent repair shop; ₹6,000–15,000 at the brand service centre

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
