Full-screen white and grey at 100% brightness, then at 20%. Tilt the lid slowly through its range. Plug in an external monitor. Record the screen with the built-in recorder: a flicker that shows in the recording is never the screen.

What it is

A flickering Surface Pro 4 screen is one of four things, and the tests separate them in a minute. Flicker that changes when you tilt the lid: the display cable through the hinge (the usual fault on this model). Flicker that is also on an external monitor or in a screen recording: the graphics driver, refresh rate or an app. Flicker only at low brightness: the backlight's PWM dimming, or a failing backlight inverter. Flicker at every brightness, every angle, only on the built-in screen: the panel. The Surface Pro 4 screen flicker, shaking and ghosting ("Flickergate") is a hardware fault Microsoft acknowledged; it worsens with heat, and no driver fixes it. Microsoft ran a replacement programme for affected units for three years after purchase.

Can it be fixed?

Driver, refresh rate, app: yes, free — update or roll back the graphics driver, set 60 Hz, disable the app's hardware acceleration. Cable: yes, a small repair. Backlight inverter (older laptops) and power boards (monitors): a repairable part. Panel: replace.

What to do

  1. Screen recording + external monitor: flicker on both = driver; reinstall it.
  2. Lid tilt: changes = cable; small repair.
  3. Low brightness only: raise brightness or set a fixed refresh rate.
  4. Every brightness, every angle: panel quote.

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
