Screen Defect

Black spot on laptop screen

White screen⛶ Full screen

On red, green, bluedead or stuck pixels, colour lines
Not fixable — new panel

A black spot that stays in the same place on every colour is physical: a cluster of dead pixels, a crack in the LCD layer, or pressure damage where the liquid crystal has been crushed.

Test it now

Open the full-screen test and step through white, red, green and blue. Dead pixels stay black on all four. A crack shows as a black blot with sharp edges, often with thin lines running out of it. A backlight shadow is soft-edged and shows only on light colours.

What it is

A black spot that stays in the same place on every colour is physical: a cluster of dead pixels, a crack in the LCD layer, or pressure damage where the liquid crystal has been crushed. A spot that is dark on white but disappears on black is a shadow on the backlight layer — usually a pressure mark or a speck between the layers. A spot that changes with the picture is on the image, not the screen.

Can it be fixed?

A true black spot is not fixable by software. Dead pixels and cracked LCD layers need a new panel. A soft shadow that is dust or a loose reflector inside the backlight can be fixed by a repair shop opening the panel — cheap, but only worth it if the spot bothers you.

What to do

  1. Run the colour test to classify the spot (all colours = panel; light colours only = backlight).
  2. Plug in an external monitor. If the spot is not there, it is the laptop's panel, not the graphics chip.
  3. Photograph it on a white screen and note the date — you need this for a warranty claim.
  4. If the laptop is under warranty and the spot is not from an impact, claim it. If it is out of warranty, get a panel quote.

What a repair costs

United States$100–300 for a new panel (parts $50–150 plus labour); budget and 1080p panels at the low end, touch and high-refresh panels at the high end
India₹3,000–8,000 for a new panel at an independent repair shop; ₹6,000–15,000 at the brand service centre

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
