IPhone XR screen problems fall into a short list, and each one has its own page: a black or white spot (pixels, pressure, backlight), a line (panel connector, cable, or graphics), a colour cast (settings or panel ageing), flicker (settings, cable, or connector), burn-in ghosts (OLED ageing), a blurry image (settings), half the screen blank (panel driver), or touch that stops responding in one area (digitiser).

Full-screen white, black and grey, then the three colours. Note what you see, on which colours, and whether it changes with pressure. Then answer the questions on the home page, or pick the matching symptom from the list below.

What it is

IPhone XR screen problems fall into a short list, and each one has its own page: a black or white spot (pixels, pressure, backlight), a line (panel connector, cable, or graphics), a colour cast (settings or panel ageing), flicker (settings, cable, or connector), burn-in ghosts (OLED ageing), a blurry image (settings), half the screen blank (panel driver), or touch that stops responding in one area (digitiser). Run the full-screen colours and use the three questions below to land on the right one. The iPhone XR has an LCD, not OLED, so a white spot on it is a backlight pressure point or a lifted reflector sheet, and a line is the panel or its connector. Apple replaces the whole display.

Can it be fixed?

Settings and software faults: yes. Cables and connectors: usually, as a small repair. Panel faults: replacement. The pages linked below say which is which for each symptom.

What to do

  1. Full-screen colours.
  2. Screenshot: fault in the screenshot = software or graphics, not the screen.
  3. Match the symptom to a page below.
  4. In warranty and no impact or pressure: claim before paying.

What a repair costs

United States$80–200 for a display on most Android phones; $200–380 at Apple for an iPhone screen out of warranty ($29–99 with AppleCare+)
India₹2,000–6,000 for a display on budget and mid-range Android phones at an independent shop, ₹6,000–20,000 for flagship OLED screens at the brand service centre; iPhone screens ₹12,000–35,000 at Apple-authorised service

Typical ranges from repair-shop and manufacturer price lists, 2026-09-06. Get two quotes; prices vary by model and city.

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).

Every phone symptom

Why is there a purple line on my iPhonePurple vertical lines on an iPhone screen are almost always the display itself: the flex connector between the panel and the board has lifted (often after a drop or a swollen battery pushing from behind), or a row or column driver on the panel has failed.Depends — see testWhite spot on phone screenA white spot on a phone screen that shows on dark backgrounds is a pressure point on the display: the phone was pressed hard in a pocket, sat on, or dropped, and the layers of the LCD or the OLED's backing have been pushed together at that point. Not fixable — new panelBright spot on iPhone screenA white spot on an iPhone screen that glows on black is one of two things.Depends — see testGalaxy S8 screen linesA line on a Galaxy S8 screen is almost always the display itself: the flex connector between the panel and the board has lifted (often after a drop or a swollen battery pushing from behind), or a row or column driver on the panel has failed.Depends — see testNote 9 screen color issueA phone screen that has turned off-colour — the whole screen, not a patch — is one of four things, in order of likelihood: a colour setting (Eye comfort / Night Light / a colour filter under Accessibility / a wallpaper-based theme), an OLED panel ageing or damaged so its colour balance has drifted (a cast that is worse at low brightness), a lifted display connector after a drop, or liquid in the display.FixableWhite spot on screen AndroidA white spot on an Android phone screen that glows on black is one of two things.Depends — see testWhy is there a line on my phone screenA line on a phone screen is almost always the display itself: the flex connector between the panel and the board has lifted (often after a drop or a swollen battery pushing from behind), or a row or column driver on the panel has failed.Depends — see testYellow spot on my phone screenA yellow spot on a phone screen is heat or adhesive: on an OLED the organic layer has aged where the phone runs hottest (the bottom, near the charging port and the processor), and on an LCD the optical adhesive between glass and panel has yellowed or separated.Depends — see testMy phone screen is pink how do I fix itA phone screen that has turned pink — the whole screen, not a patch — is one of four things, in order of likelihood: a colour setting (Eye comfort / Night Light / a colour filter under Accessibility / a wallpaper-based theme), an OLED panel ageing or damaged so its colour balance has drifted (a pink cast at low brightness is the classic AMOLED sign), a lifted display connector after a drop, or liquid in the display.FixableHorizontal lines on Oppo phone screenHorizontal lines on a Oppo screen are almost always the display itself: the flex connector between the panel and the board has lifted (often after a drop or a swollen battery pushing from behind), or a row or column driver on the panel has failed.Depends — see testLine on mobile screenA line on a mobile screen is almost always the display itself: the flex connector between the panel and the board has lifted (often after a drop or a swollen battery pushing from behind), or a row or column driver on the panel has failed.Depends — see testMobile screen burnMobile screen burn-in is a permanent ghost of something that sat still on the screen for a long time — the navigation bar, the keyboard, a game HUD, a clock. Not fixable — new panel
