Fixable

A grainy, sparkly or slightly rainbow look after fitting a screen protector is the protector, not the screen: matte protectors scatter light and make white look like fine sand, and a cheap glass protector with a thick adhesive layer adds a faint moiré against the pixel grid.

Test it now

Full-screen white and look at it from 30 cm: fine sand = matte protector. Remove the protector and look again — if white is clean, the protector was it.

What it is

A grainy, sparkly or slightly rainbow look after fitting a screen protector is the protector, not the screen: matte protectors scatter light and make white look like fine sand, and a cheap glass protector with a thick adhesive layer adds a faint moiré against the pixel grid. The screen underneath is fine.

Can it be fixed?

Yes. Swap to a clear glass protector (not matte); if a clear one is still grainy it is a low-quality protector — a better one fixes it.

What to do

  1. Confirm on white.
  2. Remove the protector; test again.
  3. Fit a clear tempered-glass protector from a known brand.
  4. Matte lovers: a matte protector is always slightly grainy; that is the trade.

What a repair costs

United States$80–200 for a display on most Android phones; $200–380 at Apple for an iPhone screen out of warranty ($29–99 with AppleCare+)
India₹2,000–6,000 for a display on budget and mid-range Android phones at an independent shop, ₹6,000–20,000 for flagship OLED screens at the brand service centre; iPhone screens ₹12,000–35,000 at Apple-authorised service

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
