A white spot on an iPhone screen that glows on black is one of two things. On an LCD phone or tablet (older iPhones up to the XR and 11, most budget Androids, every iPad) it is the backlight showing through where the reflector sheet behind the panel has been pressed — a bright, slightly fuzzy patch. On an OLED phone it is a patch of pixels stuck bright, usually after pressure or heat, and it does not fuzz at the edges.
Can it be fixed?
Backlight pressure point: sometimes — on a phone or tablet a repair shop can open the display and flatten or replace the reflector, which costs much less than a display; on a laptop it is usually cheaper to replace the panel. Stuck OLED pixels: no. A small spot on a dark wallpaper is the thing most people choose to live with.

Warranty
Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
First find out which kind of iPhone screen you have, because the answer depends on it
iPhones come with two very different screens. LCD: iPhone 8 and earlier, the XR, the 11, and every SE. An LCD has a white backlight behind the pixels, and a bright spot on an LCD is almost always the backlight showing through unevenly. OLED: the X, XS, 11 Pro, and every 12, 13, 14, 15 and later except the SE. An OLED has no backlight — each pixel makes its own light — so a bright spot on an OLED is pixels themselves stuck bright, or a damaged area.
Ten-second test: put the screen on full black, then full white. A spot that glows on black and disappears on white is the backlight — LCD models only. A spot that is visible on white as well, as a lighter patch, is the pixels — OLED, or a rarer LCD pixel fault. Then take a screenshot: a spot that is in the screenshot is software, and a restart clears it.
On an LCD iPhone: a pressed backlight
Behind an LCD is a stack of thin plastic sheets — a light guide, diffusers, a reflector — that spread the LEDs’ light evenly. Press the stack hard enough at one point and the sheets touch or crease, and from then on that point passes more light than its surroundings: a bright, soft-edged, slightly fuzzy spot, most visible on dark screens and on the lock screen, invisible on white. It is the single most common “white spot” on an iPhone 7, 8, XR and 11.
The pressure usually comes from a drop on the corner that bends the frame slightly, from sitting on the phone, or from a case that presses a hard point against the back. A screen that was recently replaced by a shop can have the same spot from a sheet being creased during fitting — that is a warranty job for the shop.
Is it fixable? Sometimes, and cheaply, by a shop — the display is opened and the backlight sheet flattened or replaced — but many shops will simply quote a display because it is faster. It is worth asking for the backlight repair by name. Apple does not do it; Apple replaces the display.
On an OLED iPhone: stuck pixels or a damaged patch
With no backlight to blame, a bright spot on an OLED iPhone is a small group of pixels that has stopped responding to the picture and sits at a fixed brightness. It is sharp-edged rather than fuzzy, shows on white as a lighter patch and on black as a glow, and it often has a pale or coloured cast. The usual causes are pressure (the phone in a back pocket, a hard case corner), heat, or a knock. A faint bright rectangle in the shape of the keyboard or navigation bar is not this — it is image retention or burn-in, which has its own page.
Is it fixable? No. Stuck OLED pixels do not recover and there is no backlight sheet to flatten; the fix is a display. Pixel-fixer apps that flash colours are for LCD stuck sub-pixels and do nothing on a damaged OLED area.
The false fixes
Restart, update iOS, reset all settings, and “turn off True Tone” all appear in the guides for this fault, and all of them do nothing to a backlight sheet or a stuck pixel. They are there because a small number of bright spots are software — a stuck screen element, an app drawing over the display — and the screenshot test finds those in ten seconds. If the spot is not in the screenshot, skip the settings.
Rubbing the spot with a cloth, pressing around it, or applying heat with a hair dryer are the other three, and on an OLED all three risk turning a small spot into a large one. On an LCD, gentle pressure around a backlight spot occasionally shifts it; it just as often makes a second spot.
Will it get worse?
A backlight pressure spot on an LCD is stable: it does not spread, though a second knock in the same place will enlarge it. A stuck OLED patch is also stable unless the cause was heat or a swollen battery, in which case the area can grow — a phone whose screen is lifting at the edge has a battery problem first and a screen problem second.
Neither affects touch, which is a separate layer.
What Apple charges
Apple replaces the display as a complete assembly for either kind of spot. Under warranty, with no sign of impact, a bright spot can be treated as a display defect — a stuck-pixel patch on an OLED that appeared with no incident is a reasonable claim; a backlight spot with a bent corner is not. With AppleCare+ it is the screen-damage fee. Out of warranty, an LCD iPhone display (8, XR, 11, SE) is the cheapest Apple screen repair there is and is also the model where a shop’s backlight repair is cheapest; an OLED display on a recent Pro is Apple’s most expensive phone screen — in India, roughly ₹10,000 on an older LCD model rising past ₹30,000 on a current Pro at Apple-authorised service, and independent repairers under that.
On an LCD model, ask a shop for the backlight repair before accepting a display quote. On an OLED model, decide whether a small spot on a dark wallpaper is something you can live with, because a great many people do.
