Can it be fixed?
No. Dead pixels, cracks and pressure marks in a MacBook display do not recover and cannot be fixed by software. Apple treats cracks and pressure marks as accidental damage — AppleCare+ covers them for a fee, the standard warranty does not; a cluster of dead pixels with no impact damage can be a warranty display fault, so ask.

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
Three things look like a black spot on a MacBook, and only one of them is cheap
Put the screen on full white, then full black, and look closely — with a phone camera zoomed in if you have one.
A hard-edged black dot or cluster that is there on every colour, and is in exactly the same place on white and black, is dead pixels or a crushed area of the LCD. That is the panel, and on a MacBook the panel is the whole lid.
A soft dark smudge that shows on white and grey and vanishes on black is a pressure mark: the liquid-crystal layer has been squeezed and no longer twists properly. Also the panel, also permanent.
A speck that moves when you wipe the glass, or that is slightly raised, or that has a shadow under it at an angle, is on the surface — and a surprising number of “black spots on my MacBook” are a fleck of something under a screen protector, a bit of dried liquid, or a dot of the anti-reflective coating that has come away. Clean the glass with a damp microfibre cloth before you do anything else.
Ten-second test: take a screenshot (Shift + Command + 3). The spot is not in the screenshot — it is the display hardware or the glass. It is in the screenshot — it is software, which on a Mac usually means a stuck window artefact or a broken app, cleared by a restart.
How MacBook panels get crushed
The MacBook display is bonded: glass, LCD (or mini-LED backlight on the 14 and 16-inch Pro) and the aluminium lid are one assembly, and the lid is thin. The usual damage is the lid being closed on something — a keycap fragment, an AirPod, a grain of sand, a sticky note with a staple — or the closed laptop being pressed hard in a bag. The glass does not have to crack; the LCD under it does, and the crack shows as a black blot, often with a faint rainbow fringe or a hairline running out of it. Apple technicians see this constantly and it is why they ask whether anything was between the keyboard and the screen.
Since the 2021 redesign, the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro have a slightly larger keyboard-to-screen gap and a thicker lid; the Air and the 13-inch models are the ones most often crushed. Never close the lid with anything on the keyboard, and never carry a MacBook in a bag with a charger brick pressed against the lid.
What is not a black spot
Staingate — the anti-reflective coating on 2013–2017 Retina MacBook Pros delaminating — looks like smudges, patches or a cloudy stain that will not wipe off, not a black dot. Apple ran a replacement programme for it that has now closed.
Blooming on the mini-LED 14 and 16-inch Pro — a soft halo around bright objects on a dark background — is how local-dimming backlights behave and is not a fault.
A dark patch that is there only on black, and glows faintly, is a backlight defect on LCD models — a reflector or diffuser problem — and is rare on MacBooks, but it is a different repair from a dead-pixel cluster.
Will it spread?
A dead-pixel cluster with no crack stays the size it is. A crushed area with a crack in the LCD spreads slowly with heat and lid flexing: what starts as a spot grows lines out of itself, and a MacBook that is opened and closed daily will typically see the lines lengthen over a few months. A pressure mark stays put.
If the spot has any line coming out of it, it is a crack, and the practical advice is to decide about the repair before it becomes a region, because the price is the same either way and the usable screen is not.
What Apple charges, and the AppleCare+ arithmetic
Apple replaces the entire display assembly — there is no panel-only repair on a MacBook. Under the one-year warranty, a dead-pixel cluster with no sign of impact can be a defect: Apple does not publish a pixel policy, so ask, and take the machine in clean. Cracks and pressure marks are accidental damage and are never warranty.
With AppleCare+, accidental screen damage costs the screen-only service fee, which is a small fraction of the out-of-warranty price and is the reason AppleCare+ on a MacBook pays for itself with a single crushed lid.
Out of warranty, Apple’s display replacement is in the several-hundred-dollar range on an Air and well beyond that on a 16-inch Pro — often a third or more of what the laptop is worth. In India, Apple-authorised service is broadly ₹35,000 to ₹70,000 depending on model. Independent Mac repairers fit genuine pull or high-grade aftermarket assemblies for meaningfully less, with two cautions: on M-series Macs the display carries a calibration Apple ties to the logic board, and a non-Apple assembly may lose True Tone; and the lid is the antenna housing on many models, so a poor fit costs Wi-Fi range.
Living with it, or trading it in
A small cluster in a corner is something most people live with, especially on a MacBook used mainly with an external display. A crack that is growing is not, because the machine loses value fastest while the screen is getting worse. Apple’s trade-in and most resellers price a MacBook with any display damage at a steep discount, so if the choice is between a repair and a sale, get the repair quote first and then the trade-in quote with and without the repair; on a recent Air or Pro the repair usually pays for itself in the trade-in difference, and on a machine over five years old it usually does not.
