Black spot on MacBook screen
A black spot, black dot or dark patch on a MacBook screen that stays put on every colour is in the display itself: a cluster of dead pixels, a crack in the LCD layer under intact glass, or pressure damage where the lid was closed on something.

Full-screen white, then red, green and blue. A spot that stays black on all four is dead pixels or a crack. A soft dark mark on white that vanishes on black is a pressure mark. Then plug in an external display: a clean picture there proves the fault is in the MacBook's own screen.
What it is

On MacBook Air and Pro the display is bonded to the glass, so a spot with no visible crack is still panel damage. A dark smudge that shows only on white is a pressure mark; a spot that shows only on black is a backlight fault.
Can it be fixed?
No. Dead pixels, cracks and pressure marks in a MacBook display do not recover and cannot be fixed by software. Apple treats cracks and pressure marks as accidental damage — AppleCare+ covers them for a fee, the standard warranty does not; a cluster of dead pixels with no impact damage can be a warranty display fault, so ask.
What to do
- Photograph the spot on white and on black.
- Check coverage: Settings → General → About → Coverage.
- Get an Apple quote and an independent quote; the independent price is usually half.
- Keep nothing on the keyboard when the lid closes; carry it in a sleeve.

Warranty
Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
