Horizontal lines on MacBook Air screen
A line pattern shows a missing or extra row instantly; the colour tiles below show whether it is on every colour.
Plain colours, full screen:
Horizontal lines on a MacBook Air screen come from one of three places, and the test tells them apart.
Test it now
Full-screen white, then black, then the colours: a panel line is fixed and identical on all of them. Tilt the lid slowly from 45° to 120° — a cable line changes or disappears. Plug in an external monitor or TV: if the lines are there too, it is the graphics chip or driver. Take a screenshot: a line in the screenshot is never the screen.
What it is
Horizontal lines on a MacBook Air screen come from one of three places, and the test tells them apart. Lines that change when you tilt the lid: the display cable through the hinge. Lines that are also on an external monitor or in a screenshot: the graphics chip or driver, not the screen. Lines that are fixed, identical on every colour, and only on the built-in screen: the panel. Horizontal lines and bands usually point to the row driver or the cable; a band that flickers is nearly always the cable. MacBook Air horizontal lines at the bottom of the screen are the display flex cable at the hinge ("flexgate" on 2016–2018 models) or the panel; Apple replaces the whole display.
Can it be fixed?
Cable: yes, a small repair (Apple replaces the whole display; an independent repairer replaces the flex). Graphics driver: yes, free — update, or roll back. Panel: no, replace the panel. Graphics chip hardware: usually a motherboard, and on a laptop that decides whether it is worth it.
What to do
- Screenshot and external monitor first: lines on both = graphics driver or chip.
- Lid tilt: changes = cable; a small repair.
- Fixed on every colour, only on the built-in screen: panel quote.
- In warranty and no drop or pressure: claim it — lines are a covered panel fault.
What a repair costs
| United States | $450–800 at Apple out of warranty (Air at the low end, 14"/16" Pro at the high end); $300–500 at an independent repairer |
|---|---|
| India | ₹35,000–70,000 at Apple-authorised service; ₹15,000–30,000 at an independent repairer |

Warranty
Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
