Not fixable — new panel

Dark, sharply defined marks on a white screen — dots, smudges or short lines — are pressure marks: the liquid crystal has been squeezed at that point and no longer twists to let light through.

Test it now

Full-screen white. Wipe the screen first with a dry microfibre cloth — if the mark stays, it is inside. Marks stay put on grey and are invisible on black.

What it is

Dark, sharply defined marks on a white screen — dots, smudges or short lines — are pressure marks: the liquid crystal has been squeezed at that point and no longer twists to let light through. They follow a fingertip or an object that was pressed against the closed lid. They are not dirt, and they are not on the surface.

Can it be fixed?

No. Very light marks occasionally fade over weeks as the crystal relaxes; most do not. Rubbing makes them worse. The fix is a new panel, and it is not a warranty fault.

What to do

  1. Clean the screen and re-check on white.
  2. Photograph and leave it alone — do not press, rub or apply heat.
  3. Decide whether it is worth a panel: for a small mark most people live with it.
  4. Prevent more: nothing between keyboard and lid, and no weight on the closed laptop.

What a repair costs

United States$100–300 for a new panel (parts $50–150 plus labour); budget and 1080p panels at the low end, touch and high-refresh panels at the high end
India₹3,000–8,000 for a new panel at an independent repair shop; ₹6,000–15,000 at the brand service centre

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
