Permanent smudge on phone screen
A permanent smudge or stain on a phone screen that no cloth removes is one of three things: the oleophobic coating has worn through in patches (looks like a greasy print that will not wipe off, usually where the thumb rests), moisture or oil has crept under the screen protector, or the OLED has a faint burn-in ghost that reads as a smear.

Screen off, tilt it under a light: a coating patch shows as a dull area. Screen on, full-screen grey: burn-in ghosts show. Full-screen white: dirt under a protector shows as a dark cloud.

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered.
