Discolouration on a laptop screen means the colour is wrong in one area, not everywhere: a yellow or brown patch, a blue or purple edge, a dim corner, a pink blotch.

What it is

Discolouration on a laptop screen means the colour is wrong in one area, not everywhere: a yellow or brown patch, a blue or purple edge, a dim corner, a pink blotch. A discoloured corner is where the panel has been pressed — a corner drop, a tight bag, a hand on the lid — and on an LCD the diffuser sheet has been dented or has slipped. On an LCD it is the backlight films or the optical adhesive: a dented reflector (bright), a slipped diffuser (dim band), yellowed adhesive (warm patch). Can it be fixed?

Heat, pressure and burn-in discolouration: no. Films and adhesive on an LCD: a shop can sometimes reseat the diffuser or re-laminate; usually a panel is quoted. A patch that arrived with no drop or heat is a panel fault and a warranty claim.

What to do

  1. White, grey, black in full screen; photograph on white.
  2. Shape of an app element → burn-in.
  3. Corner or edge after a drop → pressure; not covered, live with it or replace.
  4. No cause and in warranty → claim it as a panel fault.

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
