A white screen cannot show blur. This card is the test: small type that should be crisp at arm's length. Soft everywhere = settings; soft in one area = the panel.
Blur on a laptop screen is nearly always settings, not the panel: the display is running below its native resolution, the scaling is set to a value that forces interpolation (125% or 150% on a 1080p panel is common), ClearType or font smoothing is off, or an external monitor is set as the main display at a different resolution.
Test it now
Open the full-screen test and look at the sharp edge of the black-and-white pattern (Pattern button → grid). Crisp lines mean the panel is fine and the blur is in software. Doubled or smeared lines mean the cable.
What it is
Blur on a laptop screen is nearly always settings, not the panel: the display is running below its native resolution, the scaling is set to a value that forces interpolation (125% or 150% on a 1080p panel is common), ClearType or font smoothing is off, or an external monitor is set as the main display at a different resolution. A panel cannot go "soft" by itself; the two physical causes are a dirty or smudged screen and, rarely, a failing display cable that produces ghosted or doubled edges.
Can it be fixed?
Yes. Set the resolution to native (the one marked "Recommended"), set scaling to 100% or 125%, run the ClearType tuner on Windows, clean the screen with a dry microfibre cloth. A cable fault is a small repair.
What to do
- Windows: Settings → System → Display → set the recommended resolution and try 100% scale. Mac: System Settings → Displays → Default for display.
- Windows: search "ClearType" and run the tuner. Set the browser and app zoom back to 100%.
- Clean the screen; smudges scatter light and read as blur.
- If lines in the grid pattern are doubled or smeared, tilt the lid: change means the cable — repair shop.

Warranty
Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
