Not fixable — new panel

A black spot, patch or blot on a mobile screen that is there on every colour is damage inside the display: crushed pixels from pressure, or an internal crack in the panel with the glass intact.

Test it now

Full-screen white, then red, green, blue. A spot on all four is the panel. Take a photo of it today and again in a week: a spreading patch needs replacing soon, before touch stops working in that area.

What it is

A black spot, patch or blot on a mobile screen that is there on every colour is damage inside the display: crushed pixels from pressure, or an internal crack in the panel with the glass intact. A black patch that spreads over days — often with a purple or rainbow edge — is a damaged OLED panel and it will keep spreading. A dark smudge that shows only on white is a pressure mark.

Can it be fixed?

No. Spots and spreading patches are physical panel damage; the display is replaced. Warranty treats it as accidental damage; a protection plan covers it for a fee.

What to do

  1. Photograph it and back up the phone — spreading patches can take the touch layer with them.
  2. Check for a protection plan.
  3. Brand versus independent quote for a display module.
  4. Case and screen protector for the next one.

What a repair costs

United States$80–200 for a display on most Android phones; $200–380 at Apple for an iPhone screen out of warranty ($29–99 with AppleCare+)
India₹2,000–6,000 for a display on budget and mid-range Android phones at an independent shop, ₹6,000–20,000 for flagship OLED screens at the brand service centre; iPhone screens ₹12,000–35,000 at Apple-authorised service

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
