Screen Defect

Black dot on phone screen

White screen⛶ Full screen
On whitedark spots, pressure marks, lines
On blackbright dots, backlight bleed, glow
On red, green, bluedead or stuck pixels, colour lines
Depends — see test

A single small black dot on a phone screen is one of three things: a dead pixel (a sharp black point on every colour), a speck of dust under the screen protector or the glass (raised, and it moves with the protector), or the start of pressure damage (soft-edged, grows over time).

Test it now

Full-screen white, then red, green and blue. Dead pixel: black on all four, exactly one pixel size. Dust: peel back the protector corner and look. Pressure: soft edge, larger than a pixel.

What it is

A single small black dot on a phone screen is one of three things: a dead pixel (a sharp black point on every colour), a speck of dust under the screen protector or the glass (raised, and it moves with the protector), or the start of pressure damage (soft-edged, grows over time). A dot near the top of the screen on many phones is the proximity sensor or the front camera cut-out — not a fault.

Can it be fixed?

Dust: yes, clean and refit the protector. A stuck pixel (wrong colour rather than black): sometimes, with the pixel fixer. A dead pixel or a pressure dot: no — but a single dead pixel is not worth a display replacement; it is worth a return if the phone is new.

What to do

  1. Colour test to classify it.
  2. Check the screen protector.
  3. Stuck pixel: fixer for 15 minutes.
  4. New phone with a dead pixel: return it within the return window rather than claiming warranty.

What a repair costs

United States$80–200 for a display on most Android phones; $200–380 at Apple for an iPhone screen out of warranty ($29–99 with AppleCare+)
India₹2,000–6,000 for a display on budget and mid-range Android phones at an independent shop, ₹6,000–20,000 for flagship OLED screens at the brand service centre; iPhone screens ₹12,000–35,000 at Apple-authorised service

Typical ranges from repair-shop and manufacturer price lists, 2026-09-06. Get two quotes; prices vary by model and city.

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
