Fixable

An Android phone screen that flickers or flashes is nearly always one of three things: the adaptive brightness or the OLED's low-brightness dimming (PWM) fighting with a setting, a display driver bug after an update, or a loose display connector after a drop.

Test it now

Turn off adaptive brightness and set brightness to 100%; if the flicker stops, it was low-brightness dimming. Restart into Safe Mode. Record the screen: flicker in the recording is software. Press gently at the edges: flicker under light pressure is the connector.

What it is

An Android phone screen that flickers or flashes is nearly always one of three things: the adaptive brightness or the OLED's low-brightness dimming (PWM) fighting with a setting, a display driver bug after an update, or a loose display connector after a drop. Flicker that also happens in Safe Mode and at every brightness is the display.

Can it be fixed?

Settings and software: yes, free. Loose connector: often, a shop re-seats it. Panel: no — new display.

What to do

  1. Adaptive brightness off, brightness 100%.
  2. Safe Mode; screen recording.
  3. Update the phone; if it started after an update, wait for the next.
  4. Edge pressure test → connector re-seat quote.

What a repair costs

United States$80–200 for a display on most Android phones; $200–380 at Apple for an iPhone screen out of warranty ($29–99 with AppleCare+)
India₹2,000–6,000 for a display on budget and mid-range Android phones at an independent shop, ₹6,000–20,000 for flagship OLED screens at the brand service centre; iPhone screens ₹12,000–35,000 at Apple-authorised service

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
