Fixable

Green dots, sparkles or checkerboard blocks across a monitor screen with an NVIDIA (or AMD) graphics card are artefacts from the graphics card, not the screen: they appear in screenshots, they change with GPU load and temperature, and they follow the card to another monitor.

Test it now

Take a screenshot while the dots are showing: dots in the screenshot = graphics card. Swap the cable and try another monitor or the TV. Watch the GPU temperature; artefacts that start when the card is hot are thermal.

What it is

Green dots, sparkles or checkerboard blocks across a monitor screen with an NVIDIA (or AMD) graphics card are artefacts from the graphics card, not the screen: they appear in screenshots, they change with GPU load and temperature, and they follow the card to another monitor. Causes, in order: an overclock (including a factory one), a bad DisplayPort or HDMI cable, an overheating card, failing video memory. Green dots or sparkles across the whole image with an NVIDIA card are graphics artefacts, not the screen: an overclock, a failing card, a bad cable or an overheating GPU. They appear in screenshots; a screen fault never does.

Can it be fixed?

Overclock: yes, reset to stock. Cable: yes. Overheating: clean the card and case; repaste if old. Failing memory: no — the card is on its way out; replace it while it is still worth something.

What to do

  1. Screenshot: dots present = card, not screen.
  2. Reset any overclock; update the driver cleanly.
  3. New cable; test another display.
  4. Temperatures under load; clean or replace the card.

What a repair costs

United Statesusually more than the monitor is worth — a panel swap starts around $150 and most 24"–27" monitors cost less new
India₹4,000–10,000 for a panel, so a new monitor is often the better buy

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
