A cracked screen screen has two layers that can break separately: the cover glass (touch still works, image is fine, cracks feel sharp) and the display underneath (black blots, lines, dead touch areas).

Test it now

Full-screen white and black: lines or blots on white that are not in the crack pattern = display damage. Touch test: dead squares = digitiser damage. Glass only: the image is perfect under the cracks.

What it is

A cracked screen screen has two layers that can break separately: the cover glass (touch still works, image is fine, cracks feel sharp) and the display underneath (black blots, lines, dead touch areas). Glass-only cracks are cosmetic until they spread; display damage grows over days. A cracked screen is accidental damage and never a warranty fault.

Can it be fixed?

Glass only: a shop can replace the glass alone on many models for far less than a display, but the result depends on the shop; the brand service centre replaces the whole display assembly. Display damage: new display assembly.

What to do

  1. White, black, touch test.
  2. Glass only: tape or a protector over it now to stop slivers; quote for glass-only versus display.
  3. Display damage: display quote soon, before it spreads.
  4. Check whether the phone is covered by a damage protection plan.

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
