Screen Defect

Computer screen blurry

About 5 seconds, full screen, then one question.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. 0123456789 — this line should be crisp at arm's length.

Smaller: the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. If letters smear or double, note where on the screen it happens.

Smallest: iIl1 oO0 rn m — soft everywhere is a settings problem; soft in one corner is the panel.

Second column, same text: the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Edges of letters should be black on white, not grey or coloured.

iIl1 oO0 rn m — compare the two columns.

A white screen cannot show blur. This card is the test: small type that should be crisp at arm's length. Soft everywhere = settings; soft in one area = the panel.

Fixable

A blurry computer screen is a settings problem far more often than a hardware one.

Test it now

Full-screen white and look at the edges of the page text on this site: uniformly soft = settings. Take a screenshot and view it on another device: a sharp screenshot means the computer is the problem, not the image. Press gently beside the blurry area: movement = layers or protector.

What it is

A blurry computer screen is a settings problem far more often than a hardware one. The screen is running below its native resolution (everything is soft), display scaling is on a fractional value like 125% (text is soft), ClearType or font smoothing is off, the refresh rate or cable is wrong (a fuzzy image over VGA or a cheap HDMI cable), or the screen simply needs cleaning. Hardware blur — one area soft, the rest sharp — is a panel with a delaminated layer, and that is rare.

Can it be fixed?

Settings, cable, cleaning: yes, free. Panel delamination: replace the panel.

What to do

  1. Set the native resolution and 100% scaling.
  2. Turn ClearType / font smoothing on; set the refresh rate to the native value.
  3. Digital cable (HDMI/DisplayPort), not VGA; a better cable.
  4. Clean the screen; if one area stays soft, panel quote.

What a repair costs

United Statesusually more than the monitor is worth — a panel swap starts around $150 and most 24"–27" monitors cost less new
India₹4,000–10,000 for a panel, so a new monitor is often the better buy

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
