A flickering Chrome screen is the signal, the refresh rate or the backlight.

Test it now

Full-screen white at 100%, then 20% brightness. Change the refresh rate (60 Hz) and the cable. Open the screen's own menu: flicker across the menu is the screen, not the source.

What it is

A flickering Chrome screen is the signal, the refresh rate or the backlight. Flicker in a screen recording: the graphics driver or an app. Flicker that stops when you change the cable or the refresh rate: the cable or the setting. Flicker at low brightness only: the backlight's dimming. Flicker on every input and in the on-screen menu: the screen's power board or backlight. Chrome flickers when hardware acceleration fights the graphics driver: turn off "Use graphics acceleration when available" in Chrome settings, or update the graphics driver. If only Chrome flickers, the screen is fine.

Can it be fixed?

Driver, refresh rate, app: yes, free — update or roll back the graphics driver, set 60 Hz, disable the app's hardware acceleration. Cable: yes, a small repair. Backlight inverter (older laptops) and power boards (monitors): a repairable part. Panel: replace.

What to do

  1. Screen recording + external monitor: flicker on both = driver; reinstall it.
  2. Lid tilt: changes = cable; small repair.
  3. Low brightness only: raise brightness or set a fixed refresh rate.
  4. Every brightness, every angle: panel quote.

What a repair costs

United StatesPhone display $80–380; laptop panel $100–300; monitor panel from $150 (often more than a new monitor)
IndiaPhone display ₹2,000–20,000; laptop panel ₹3,000–15,000; monitor panel ₹4,000–10,000 (a new monitor is often the better buy)

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
