Ants inside a screen screen are real, and common in warm countries: tiny ants walk in through the speaker or charging port grille and end up between the panel layers, where they show as moving black specks on white.

Test it now

Full-screen white and watch for thirty seconds: moving specks are live ants. Fixed specks that were not there last week are dead ones.

What it is

Ants inside a screen screen are real, and common in warm countries: tiny ants walk in through the speaker or charging port grille and end up between the panel layers, where they show as moving black specks on white. They are attracted to warmth and, on a charging phone, to the electrical field. Dead ants stay as fixed specks; live ones move as you watch.

Can it be fixed?

Live ants: often — power off, place the screen on a warm surface (a router, a laptop charger) for an hour with the ports open, and they walk out toward the heat. Dead ants between the layers: no, short of opening the display. A repair shop can clean them out when replacing a display, not otherwise.

What to do

  1. Power off; ports open; warm surface for an hour.
  2. Do not spray anything into the phone.
  3. Stop the source: no phone on the kitchen counter or bed, keep the charging spot clean.
  4. Dead specks: live with them or a display later.

What a repair costs

United StatesPhone display $80–380; laptop panel $100–300; monitor panel from $150 (often more than a new monitor)
IndiaPhone display ₹2,000–20,000; laptop panel ₹3,000–15,000; monitor panel ₹4,000–10,000 (a new monitor is often the better buy)

Warranty

Most makers replace a panel under warranty for physical panel faults that are not accidental damage; pressure marks, cracks and liquid damage are treated as accidental and are not covered. For dead pixels, each brand has a threshold (typically 3–5 bright or 5–8 dark pixels on a laptop; Dell's premium-panel guarantee replaces at one bright pixel).
